The I3 Support Facility has published a new analytical article titled "Strengthening the EU’s raw materials value chains through interregional collaboration: the I4-GREEN case" as part of the I3 Instrument insights articles series. This publication explores how the I4-GREEN project serves as a strategic catalyst for sustainable, circular, and socially responsible innovation within the European Union's critical raw materials supply chains.
A central feature of the case study is the successful deployment of two industrial pilots located in the less developed regions of Extremadura and Andalucia in Spain; these pilots demonstrate cutting-edge technologies, such as the recovery of rare earth elements from mining waste and the use of E-LIX™ hydrometallurgical technology to extract strategic metals with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
Furthermore, the project showcases the vital role of SMEs in the green transition; through an open call, 12 SMEs were selected to receive cascade funding and specialised business services, allowing them to integrate their innovative solutions directly into industrial mining operations.
The I4-GREEN experience provides a promising model for future EU initiatives, demonstrating how trust-based, interregional cooperation can evolve into concrete investments that reinforce Europe’s resilience and leadership in the circular economy.
